Pacman-

Pacman was the second game i created on gamemaker with the help of the game maker, step by step book. It was fairly easy to follow along the way, however, i ran into a few issues as when you would fail/lose the game the game would completely crash meaning you would have to reset the whole game to play another round. Sometimes, it would completely crash gamemaker and would not let you click off the gamemaker program meaning you'd have to sign out of the computer and log back in which would take a while just to play another game of Pacman. In my opinion, it was more different but easier to find issues glitches than the Breakout game.I later fixed the issues i had at hand, by deleting the controls for Pacman and the ghosts and redoing the actions and it fixed the issue. Unlike the Breakout game i decided to change the background of Pacman as i didn't like the grey background, therefore, i made a dark grunge background that looked fantastic in game. In all honesty i had ideas for re skinning Pacman yet none of them stuck as not one of them looked ideal for a pacman.

Above shows the dark grunge background that i included in my pacman game to replace the dull, grey background that was default for all the gamemaker games. As seen, its quite fitting for this particular game as in the other pacman games the background always seemed to be a black colour and the mixture between the black and dark grey makes it look more professional.. Also above you can seem the comparison between my pacman background i had created to the original pacman background.

Game 3-Space invaders

Space Invaders

After completing both my breakout and pacman games, i started on my space invaders. Like the pacman compared to breakout, this was a little more difficult to make as i also experienced some technical difficulties, which i hadn't had experienced with pacman or breakout.
The splash screen below is one of many difficulties i had. Not the making of it but the action of it switching to the next room once you clicked the space bar- It would slightly glitch to the next room but then go right back to the splash screen so i had to delete the event to go to the next room and re-add it back which was very simple to do, however, i hadn't experienced this with my other splash screens from the previous two games.

Once i finished, tested and evaluated my game i checked to see if i had met the following requirements:
  • The aliens should start at the top of the screen and gradually move down.
  • The shooter object should move along the bottom of the screen and fire missiles at the aliens
  • If a missile hits an alien, it should explode and disappear.
  • Every time an alien is destroyed the player should gain a point and the player wins the game if a certain score is reached.
  • If the aliens reach the bottom of the screen, the player loses the game.
  • There should be two types of aliens and the second type cannot be destroyed until all of the first type have been destroyed.
  • The game should have sound.
As seen above, the certain event i had a problem with was that the second type would also die even before all the first type were eliminated. I had read the game maker book step-by-step but kept having the same problem. Like the last problem i had to delete ALL my events for Alien2, including the ones that were not attached to that particular event.

Once i managed to finish all the problems in hand, which only took me a few minutes as they were easy fixes i ran my game again in debug mode and found that everything was working perfectly! In conclusion, although i found some difficulties whilst making this particular game, i progressed through it and found ways to fix it and eventually got it all to work and run smoothly.

Update:
As i decided that i didn't want to keep the boring background for the space invaders game, I chose to create a more fitting background with that alone proving a perfect fit to suit the game. The background being a black and green lined background that gives it that extra effect for my game. Although it is a simple design it helps create character for that game- I also had to double check that once i created the background that the enemies/shooter and ball didn't colour mix with that background. As well as the new background, i also wanted to reskin the game so i changed the enemies from the regular ghosts to these 'slime' enemies that almost represented a slug of sorts!
